Customer Instructions to Update DNS Records

Step 1: Login to DNS Hosting Service

In order to update the DNS for your domain you will need to login to your DNS hosting provider. Typically this is where you registered your domain (also known as your domain registrar like GoDaddy or Bluehost), but could be a different service if the nameservers have been changed.

Step 2: Find DNS Records

Once you login to your DNS Hosting provider you will need to select the domain name you want to update the DNS records for. Once you have found that domain you will go to manage or edit your DNS records for your domain.

Where this is located will depend on your domain hosting service, but you can find instructions for several of the main domain registrars below:

GoDaddy

Bluehost

Namecheap

Step 3: Update DNS Records

Next you will need to edit the DNS records for your domain. If you are using a root / apex domain you will find and update the following records (changes are bolded):

Action

Type

Name

Data

Edit

A

@

40.88.135.152

Edit

CNAME

www

app.causemachine.com

Add

CNAME

_acme-challenge

YOURDOMAINNAMEHERE.abc6fc50e9598e53.dcv.cloudflare.com

For the last record, replace YOURDOMAINNAMEHERE with your actual domain name (without www). So, if your domain name is www.mycommunity.com the last value would be: mycommunity.com.abc6fc50e9598e53.dcv.cloudflare.com

If you are using a subdomain (like community.mywebsite.com) then you will make the following changes:

Action

Type

Name

Data

Edit

CNAME

YOURSUBDOMAIN

app.causemachine.com

Add

CNAME

_acme-challenge

YOURDOMAINNAMEHERE.abc6fc50e9598e53.dcv.cloudflare.com

Replace YOURSUBDOMAIN with the subdomain you are using. If your domain is community.mywebsite.com, then the subdomain would be “community”

For the last record, replace YOURDOMAINNAMEHERE with your actual domain name (without the subdomain or www). So, if your custom domain name is community.mywebsite.com the last value would be: mywebsite.com.abc6fc50e9598e53.dcv.cloudflare.com

Step 4: Verify Change

It can take a few hours for DNS changes to fully propagate so check over the next few hours to ensure that your domain is working properly. You can also check the DNS values for your custom domain in Cause Machine under Settings -> Domains:

Please note, the TXT data may continue to appear in RED (as seen below). These TXT records are not needed for existing domains. You can always add those records if you want everything to show in green - but they are NOT required.
