Content & Website Security

As a community, protecting your content and members is important. Communities have control in determining what content is considered public (and Google searchable) and what is private (content only your community can view/or certain groups within your community can view).

If your community has set content to "Public" status, this content will show up to the public in searches on search engines, such as Google Search.

If your community has set content to "Private" status, this content will not show up to the public in searches on search engines, such as Google Search.

If you are wanting search engines such as Google to start searching your "Public" content, and it is not currently showing up when you search for it, there are a couple reasons why this may be happening and ways to fix:

  1. Google may not be aware of it yet. You can submit your domain to Google Webmaster Tools once your site is live to let Google know to index it.
  2. The canonical URL for each piece of content and test site isn't pointing anywhere yet because you haven't hooked up a custom domain. Once you have connected your custom domain this will set the canonical URL which Google uses to determine the authoritative source of the content.
